The History of Aleppo Soap – A Tradition from Syria
A Heritage from the Ancient City of Aleppo
Aleppo soap is one of the oldest natural soaps in the world. Its origins date back over 2,000 years—to the heart of the historic city of Aleppo in Syria. Generations of soap makers have passed down their techniques and secrets from hand to hand. This soap is not just a cleansing product but also a part of cultural heritage.
What Makes Aleppo Soap Special?
Aleppo soap is made exclusively from natural ingredients—primarily olive oil and laurel oil. This unique combination is gentle on the skin, moisturizing, and has antiseptic properties. The higher the laurel oil content, the more intensive the care—making it ideal for sensitive or problem-prone skin.
Ingredients:
-
Olive oil – nourishes and protects
-
Laurel oil – cleanses and has antibacterial properties
-
Sodium hydroxide – used for saponification, fully neutralized during drying
-
Water – as the base
Traditional Production
Soap is traditionally made in winter. Olive oil is cooked in large cauldrons, laurel oil is added, and the mixture is spread onto large trays. After cutting into blocks, the soap undergoes a months-long curing process, which gives it its characteristic golden-green color and firm texture.
From the Orient to the World
Via the Silk Road and trade routes, Aleppo soap made its way to Europe. It is considered the mother of all solid natural soaps, including the famous Savon de Marseille. Today, Aleppo soap is experiencing a worldwide revival—not only for its natural qualities but also as a symbol of sustainable care.
